Maritime Medicine Instructor

Desired Qualifications

  • USCG Master Mariner preferred (not required for shore based and secondary instructor)

  • Certifications

    • Professional healthcare license or certification in good standing: EMT-B's, Paramedic, RN, PA, NP, MD, DO.

  • Cruising, racing, daysailing, or charter experience beneficial

  • Offshore experience a plus

Key Responsibilities

  • Risk Management

    • Shore Based

      • Emergency Action Plan: Familiarity with venue/ itinerary, communications/rescue contacts, activity and rescue equipment, scenario and skills locations

      • Ensure safety of clients and staff through evolving awareness of risk and hazards (both fixed and dynamic)

    • Off-Shore

      • Emergency Action Plan: Familiarity with venue/ itinerary, communications/rescue contacts, activity and rescue equipment, scenario and skills locations

      • Review Medical Disclosure forms, perform equipment verifications, rider survey, welfare checks

      • Determine rider fitness, make individual and group decisions 

      • Ensure safety of clients and staff through evolving awareness of risk and hazards (both fixed and dynamic)

      • Host up to 6 clients (50ft monohull or less) for a well choreographed lecture, skills, scenarios, and navigation lessons choreographed perfectly to the weather and passage.

  • Operational Duties

    • Preparation

      • Vessel: Complete Vessel Preparation Checklist, Charter Agreement, Insurance Documents, Licensure

      • Training Equipment: Inventory and maintain teaching equipment for skills, labs, and trips, Inventory and maintain personal equipment to meet operational standards

      • Logistics

        • Coordinate with Logistics Manager and site facilities managers

        • Coordinate with Primary/Secondary Instructors, Proctors, and volunteers for teaching assignment and choreography 

      • Curriculum

        • During the Course

          • Instruction: Lecture, Skills, and Scenarios content delivered per Instructor Manual and Training program specifications

        • After the Course

          • Gathering, Submitting, and Researching questions

          • Forwarding new information to the other instructors

          • Share roster/ evals/ photos with Logistics Manager
